Dr. Jacqueline Shan shares immigrant story in new eBook

Dr. Jacqueline Shan is one of many contributors to a new eBook that chronicles the stories of newcomers to Canada, particularly in Edmonton. Here she shares her thoughts on this project.

Hello,

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed spending the holidays with your family and friends.

I wanted to share with you a different kind of project that I have been involved with.

Action for Healthy Communities, a registered charity which works build communities and empower diverse groups to improve their community’s health and well-being in Edmonton, has released a new eBook. “HOME: Connecting Us All” is a collection of stories from Edmonton’s diverse communities. In it, I have shared my own immigrant story in the hopes of inspiring others.

Some of you might already know about my journey as a young graduate student from China who came to Canada to pursue my dreams. Edmonton has been an important part of my success from the beginning, from completing my scientific training to launching my own business. Like the other contributors to this eBook, my family and I are proud to call this multicultural city home.

I am proud of being a Chinese Canadian. I am grateful to my motherland China for giving me a wonderful heritage, culture and education; I am grateful to Canada, my adopted country , for welcoming me with open arms, giving me an education, freedom, and the opportunities to be a scientist and entrepreneur. I hope sharing my journey and and story is helpful to other immigrants coming to this wonderful country. With same hope and hard work, we can all contribute to have better life for ourselves, our families and other Canadians.

The eBook “HOME: Connecting Us All” is available for free on the Action for Healthy Communities website, and is filled with inspiring stories from a diverse group of Edmontonians. It's a great honour to be included in this eBook and share my journey and story with others.

Thank you, Jackie
